Zephaniah

"The LORD, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing."

— Zephaniah 3:17 Reading lensThe Reading LensEvery verse pulled to the top of a book is chosen by three questions: Where is God’s heart here? Who is He protecting? Who is being saved by the action? It marks the place where those answers come into clearest focus — a “look at this, in this book.”

About the Prophet

Zephaniah preached during the reign of Josiah, warning of a sweeping “Day of the LORD” against Judah and the surrounding nations for idolatry and the quiet sin of complacency — those who say in their hearts that God will do nothing, for good or ill.

But the book turns, and turns hard. It ends with one of the most tender images of God in all of Scripture: not a distant judge, but a God present in the midst of his people, quieting them with his love and rejoicing over them with singing.

From the dark of the Day of the LORD to a God who sings — Zephaniah holds both, and lands on the song.
