Malachi

"For I, the LORD, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of Armies. But you say, “How shall we return?”"

— Malachi 3:6–7 Reading lensThe Reading LensEvery verse pulled to the top of a book is chosen by three questions: Where is God’s heart here? Who is He protecting? Who is being saved by the action? It marks the place where those answers come into clearest focus — a “look at this, in this book.”

About the Prophet

Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament, and it speaks to a tired, cynical people generations after the exile — going through the motions of worship while their hearts have gone cold. They offer blemished animals, break faith in marriage, withhold their tithes, and mutter that serving God is pointless.

God answers in a series of disputations — “you say...” — each one catching the people in their own cynicism and calling them back. “Return to me, and I will return to you.”

It closes the Hebrew canon looking forward: a messenger is coming to prepare the way, and Elijah will appear before the great and dreadful Day of the LORD. Then four centuries of silence — until a voice cries in the wilderness.
