2 John

"This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments."

— 2 John 6 Reading lensThe Reading LensEvery verse pulled to the top of a book is chosen by three questions: Where is God’s heart here? Who is He protecting? Who is being saved by the action? It marks the place where those answers come into clearest focus — a “look at this, in this book.”

About the Letter

Thirteen verses, written by “the elder” to “the chosen lady and her children” — most likely a congregation addressed figuratively, though some read it as an actual woman and her household.

It is one of the few New Testament documents short enough to have fitted on a single sheet of papyrus, and it reads like it: a greeting, one instruction, one warning, and a note that he would rather say the rest face to face.

The warning is about hospitality. Travelling teachers depended on households taking them in, and the elder says not to extend that to anyone bringing a teaching that denies Christ came in the flesh — because the welcome itself is a form of support.

The Whole Letter

The greeting to the chosen lady and the joy at finding some of her children walking in truth. The commandment that is not new but was there from the beginning. The warning about deceivers, the instruction about who not to receive — and the hope of coming in person, with paper and ink deliberately set aside.
