Gideon v. Wainwright
1963 U.S. Supreme Court ruling establishing that the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to appointed counsel for defendants who cannot afford an attorney. Used on AbilityForge as an analogy: the unrepresented patient facing an insurance denial appeal is the Gideon defendant — up against institutional legal resources with no equivalent representation.
