"Even when I don't see it. Even when I don't feel it.
You're still working — in the darkness, You're still working."
"Still Working" is essentially Philippians 1:6 set to music: "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." The title of the song is a declaration that the work hasn't stopped — even when it's invisible. Paul wrote this from prison. The darkness was literal.
Two lines in the chorus draw directly from Romans 8. "I am not afraid, You are for me" — Romans 8:31: "If God is for us, who can be against us?" And "turn it into something beautiful" — Romans 8:28: "in all things God works for the good of those who love him." Every heartbreak and burden is in scope. Nothing is exempt from that working.
The pre-chorus — "even when I don't see it, even when I don't feel it" — is the textbook definition of 2 Corinthians 5:7: "For we live by faith, not by sight." Paired with Hebrews 11:1: "faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." The unseen working is the point, not an obstacle to faith.
Verse 2: "Every tear I've cried, You bottle up." Psalm 56:8 in the older translations: "You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle — are they not in your book?" God doesn't overlook tears as noise. He collects them. They are recorded. Nothing is wasted.
Isaiah 61:3 is the "beauty for ashes" passage — "to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair." "Every heartbreak, every burden — turn it into something beautiful" is that promise held in the chorus as a declaration, not a request.
"From the seeds of hope that I have sown, You will bring a harvest yet unknown." Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." The harvest is not yet visible. That's exactly the point. The seeds are already in the ground — the still working is underground, in the dark, before anything breaks the surface.
When my heart is breaking, Lord I weep
But I lift my eyes beyond what I can see
'Cause I know You're moving faithfully
Though the storm clouds gather overhead
And the road ahead fills me with dread
I remember every word You've said
Your promises won't leave me dead
Even when I don't feel it
In the darkness You're still working
I am not afraid, You are for me
You are my shield, I trust Your promises
You're still working (still working)
Every heartbreak, every burden
Turn it into something beautiful
My Protector, my Miracle Worker
Every broken place, You're healing up
From the seeds of hope that I have sown
You will bring a harvest yet unknown
When the night feels long and hope seems lost
I remember what Your love has cost
You won't waste a single prayer I've prayed
Every sacrifice that You have made
Even when I don't feel it
In the darkness You're still working
I am not afraid, You are for me
You are my shield, I trust Your promises
You're still working (still working)
Every heartbreak, every burden
Turn it into something beautiful
My Protector, my Miracle Worker
In the darkness You're still working
I am not afraid, You are for me
You are my shield, I trust Your promises
You're still working (still working)
Every heartbreak, every burden
Turn it into something beautiful
My Protector, my Miracle Worker
Even when I can't see it
(You're still working)
Even when I don't feel it
(You're still working)
You're still working
