"Through every storm, through every trial — His love prevails.
I know my God is healing me. His mercy never fails."
Jeremiah writes Lamentations in the ashes of Jerusalem — and still finds this: "His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." The chorus is almost a direct quotation. Written from the bottom of grief, not the mountaintop. That's what makes it land.
"There's a power moving through the valley low" — the valley is Psalm 23's valley of the shadow of death. The psalm doesn't promise you'll be lifted out of it. It promises the Shepherd walks through it with you. "Morning comes with promises anew" echoes its closing — goodness and mercy following all the days of your life.
Two disciples walk away from Jerusalem, crushed. Jesus falls into step beside them — but they don't recognize Him. The song opens with that image: "I see him walking down that dusty road... something tells me he'll find." That something is the presence already walking alongside that hasn't yet been seen. The healing was already happening on the road.
"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering." The image of the man with "shoulders bent from carrying this load" is not accidental. The Suffering Servant passage describes someone carrying what wasn't his to carry — on behalf of the people walking that same road.
Paul asks God to remove a thorn. God says no — and then: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." "Every scar becomes a testimony" is Paul's response: "I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." The scar is not erased. It becomes the evidence.
Can tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, or sword separate us from the love of Christ? Paul's answer: "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors." Then the complete list of things that cannot separate — death, life, angels, demons, present, future, height, depth — nothing. "Through every storm, through every trial, His love prevails" is Romans 8 set to music.
Down that dusty road
Shoulders bent
From carrying this load
Pain written
Across his weathered face
But something tells me
He'll find...
Through the valley low
There's a mercy flowing
Where the faithful go
His mercy never fails
I know my God is healing me
When hope grows thin and pale
Through every storm
Through every trial
His love prevails
I know my God is healing me
His mercy never fails
But he won't stay down
Faith keeps lifting
What would make others drown
Morning comes
With promises anew
And I can see
The light breaking...
Through the valley low
There's a mercy flowing
Where the faithful go
His mercy never fails
I know my God is healing me
When hope grows thin and pale
Through every storm
Through every trial
His love prevails
I know my God is healing me
His mercy never fails
Every tear becomes a prayer
Every step through darkest valleys
Shows His love is always there
(Always there, yes Lord)
(His love is always there)
Give up
Give in
I say — No. No. No. My God. My God. Is Healing.
His mercy never fails
I know my God is healing me
When hope grows thin and pale
Through every storm
Through every trial
His love prevails
I know my God is healing me
His mercy never fails
(Never fails, never fails)
His mercy never fails
(Thank you Jesus)
His mercy never fails
